The Major Changes

Redesigning the Library involves a lot more than just a fresh coat of paint! Apart from some basic sprucing up, some of the biggest changes you will notice in the library are:

The Greeter Station

The new greeter station will be the first place many people will stop as they enter the library. Someone will always be there to greet you as you come in and to answer any general questions you might have about the library - such as, "Which way to the romance novels?" or "Where are the restrooms?"

Where is the Circulation Desk?

After the redesign, the area once occupied by the circulation desk will house a Self-Checkout center, a shelving area for recently returned items, a book drop bin and an Audio-Visual drop bin for returning your items. There will also be room for a New Books display!

Okay, so where is the Circulation Staff?

Don't worry, all of the library staff will still be here. It may feel as if you've been left on your own to do the things we used to do, like checking out your books or picking up your requested items - but rest assured, there will always be someone there to help you if you need it. These changes have been made in order to free library staff from some of the more routine tasks (like checking out books) so that they have time to spend on the more important tasks (like helping Timmy find the books he needs for his research project, or helping you find a new author to enjoy). We know that interaction between library staff and patrons is an important part of using the library, and we want to make sure that we will always have time for you!

The Help Desk

Before the redesign, patrons who asked detailed or involved questions at the circulation desk were often sent to the Reference desk for their answers. Because this is not a convenient system for anyone, after the redesign there will be a single place for you to bring all of your questions, big and small. You will find circulation, reference, and teen staff members ready to help you here - at the Help Desk!

Computer Cluster

If you've ever wandered around the library, trying to find a computer that was not in use, then you will definitely understand why we are taking this opportunity to relocate our public computers. Six of the computer stations that were once scattered through the library will be brought together into a cluster along with the public printer and an Express PC that will be available for quick jobs like checking email with less wait time. Two other computers will share a desk in the reference department for patrons who need more space for research or school work.

Seating Arrangements

Another big change you'll see everywhere in the library is the furniture. There will be new lounge chairs for comfy reading in the adult and teen book sections. Near the reference section, three large tables will be added. These tables will each have their own power and network outlets for laptop users. We're also adding laptop-friendly cafe-style seating that will be located near electrical outlets - and windows - so you can make use of the library's free WiFi in the way that suits you best!

The rest of the story...

Some of our collections will be shuffled, as well. Magazines and newspapers will move out of the back corner of the building, closer to the teen section and the cafe seating. The Children's room will be getting a big comfy chair for parents and kids to sit and read together in and is going to be reorganized, as well. We hope that everything will be easier to find and use after the redesign. And remember, if you ever need help locating anything in the library just head for the Help Desk!
